Utah Employee Requirements

Employees who work in on-premise alcohol serving establishments are required to complete their Sips and Tips training withing 30 days of being hired. It is recommended that the Sips and Tips training be completed before employment starts, so the employee has their certification card on their person at all times while on the job.

Utah Law Requirement

Utah Code 62A.15.401 mandates that the any of the following persons complete alcohol awareness training:

  1. A person who serves alcoholic beverages to customers on the premises of a licensed alcohol establishment.
  2. A person who supervises the serving of alcoholic beverages to customers on the premises of a licensed alcohol establishment.
  3. A person who is the manager of a licensed establishment that serves alcoholic beverages to customers for on-premise consumption.

When to Complete the Course

Although it is recommended that employees complete the Sips and Tips course before they start working, Utah law requires the course be completed within 30 days of first date of employment.

Penalty for Failure to Comply

If it is found that an employee is working without having completed their Sips and Tips certification after 30 days of commencement of employment, the employer’s liquor license can be revoked or suspended. Furthermore, the employer’s county or municipal business license may be revoked or suspended.
